A Quick Overview in Understanding Storm Damage Claims

Do you find claim summaries or insurance estimates a bit confusing to understand? This can also be a bit overwhelming especially if you haven’t filed a claim before. But if you have homeowners insurance and your roof has recently suffered significant damage, you’ll need to file a claim so that your insurance provider covers the repair and replacement costs. To help you understand the process, our roofing and seamless gutter experts at Deschutes Roofing share their insight:

How a Claim Summary Works

A claim summary is an insurance adjuster’s estimate of the expected cost to repair the storm damages on your home. Separate structures such as sheds and gazebos are also listed, and they can be found on one section of the claim summary as “other structures” or something similar. The final section of the claim summary is where your damaged items are listed, which can include almost anything such as outdoor furniture, spa/pool covers, or even mailboxes.

A claim summary is essentially a collection of sectioned spreadsheets corresponding not just to your roofing system and seamless gutters, but also to each part of your home including your interiors. This is prepared to itemize your damages that need repair or replacement after a recent natural disaster.

Insurance Loss Statement

This is usually written by your insurance adjuster after they inspected your home for storm damage. It should include every item that needs to be repaired and replaced. The statement of loss will typically include the initial cost for roof and exterior repairs, the estimated replacement cash value (RCV) to repair each item, and the projected actual cash value (ACV). These are explained in more detail when you review your statement of loss properly.

Keep in mind that a statement of loss isn’t the final computation of the repair and replacement costs. It’s only a projected estimate that can still change depending on the renovation process. Most insurance companies will also refrain from awarding your check until the repair estimates are included. They do this only because they want to determine the claim’s accuracy and that the cash is used to cover the costs.
