Characteristics of a Well-Installed Asphalt Shingle Roof

Quality installation is vital to a long-lasting residential roofing system. A properly handled and built roof is more than just aesthetically pleasing. It will also protect your home against the elements and help improve your living space’s comfort.

Here’s how you’ll know if you have a well-installed asphalt shingle roof.

Uniform Home Roof Look

Check your roof from the ground. Do the shingles look uniform? If they appear crooked or misaligned, contact your installer immediately. It could be that your contractor made an error while installing your roof, which they would have to fix.

Adequate Roofing Overhang

A correctly installed roof has just the right amount of overhang, around 1 to 1 1/2 inches. Too much overhang can increase the likelihood of shingle blow-off. If there isn’t sufficient overhang, water could drip into the fascia. Get in touch with your contractor right away if you notice that your shingles are loose or sliding.

Proper Roof Flashing Installation

Flashing protects residential and commercial roofing systems against leaks. This component is installed around protrusions, such as vents, chimneys and skylights. It’s a thin sheet of metal designed to direct water away from the most vulnerable areas of your roof. Corroded or deteriorating flashing must be replaced to minimize the risk of water intrusion.

Sturdy Roof Decking

Beneath the shingles is the decking. It provides a stable and level surface for the installation of roofing components. Aside from supporting the weight of your roof, it also handles additional loads like snow and high winds. You’ll know the decking is in poor condition if some sections of your roof are sagging or dipping. Roof leaks, mold growth and rot are other common signs of compromised decking.
