A tributary of the Deschutes River, the Metolius River may be found in the Central Oregon region of the United States, close to the city of Sisters. From springs located close to Black Butte, the river travels in a generally northerly direction before making a dramatic bend to the east and dropping through a number of gorges on its way to the western end of the lake. The unincorporated community of Camp Sherman can be found at the mouth of the river at its southernmost point. The name of the river derives from the Warm Springs or Sahaptin word mitula, which translates to “white salmon.” Despite the name, the salmon that is being referred to here is a Chinook salmon, not a whitefish.
