How to Address Clogged Downspouts and Underground Drains at Home

Your gutters are designed to catch the water runoff from your residential roofing system so that it can direct it safely through the downspouts and down the drain. Regular cleaning and maintenance are necessary if you want to keep them in good condition, or else they can accumulate dirt and debris that can cause clogs to the system. 

Of course, clogs won’t just happen on gutters but downspouts and underground drain as well. These can become costly to clean and repair if they’re not immediately addressed. 

Understanding Downspouts and Underground Drains

Downspouts are sometimes placed just a few inches above the floor drains. Others are connected directly to underground drains, which are designed to redirect the water away from your home. Depending on the design, the underground drain will direct the water runoff to the nearest sidewalk, street, or underground sewer line.

Telltale Signs of Clogs in Your Home Gutter System

If you notice water leaking at the seams and joints, this can indicate a blockage somewhere on your gutters. Water pooling and backing up in your gutters also indicate clogs, so a thorough cleaning should solve the problem. But if your gutters are already clean and water still seems to overflow, then there may be clogs on your underground drain. Another sign that the clogs are coming from your underground drain is water leaking through the walls of your basement, and if this is the case, then you won’t be able to repair the damage on your own. Preventing Future Clogs at Home

One of the best ways to prevent clogs on your underground drain is to install gutter guards. These are effective in keeping out leaves, branches, and other debris while maintaining smooth water flow. As an added precaution, consider installing a downspout strainer and filter box as well. Strainers ensure that debris won’t get into your downspouts, and even if some manage to get through, the filter box will still catch them so they won’t clog your underground drainage system.
