Preparing Your Home’s Exteriors for a Roofing Project

In a typical roof replacement project, there will be small debris from old materials that might fall off the wrong way and cause accidental damage to your home exterior or surrounding landscape. Professional roofers always make sure to prevent such accidents as they can not only lead to costly repairs but also potentially injure unsuspecting children or pets.

If you want to protect your garden and your home’s exterior, local roofing and snow dam removal specialist Deschutes Roofing shares what you need to do:

Before the Home Roof Renovation Starts

Make sure that you and your hired contractor check your home’s surroundings for any furniture, landscape, or items that have pre-existing damage or issues. Your contractor might also take a few pictures or a short video so that they’ll have proof of what your landscape and the rest of your home’s surroundings looked like before the roofing project starts. Your hired contractor also needs to document your home’s exteriors so that they won’t be falsely accused of property damage during and after the roofing process and forced to pay.

Place Trash and Dumpster Bins Nearby

To ensure that the old roofing materials are properly disposed of, a proper “flow” of old debris from the roof towards the trash or dumpster bin must be established. Your hired GAF roofer will make sure that these are placed appropriately near your roof so that the flow isn’t disrupted and the project gets completed on time. The trash/dumpster bins are usually placed at the driveway throughout the roofing process, so be sure to put plywood sheets to prevent scrapes and dents in the area.

Use Tarps to Protect and Prepare Your Landscape

Tarps should also be placed over the area near your roof. This includes the shrubs and grassy area, as well as any nearby furniture and landscaping. They’re the most vulnerable to falling debris during the renovation process such as granules, nails, old materials, and so on. The tarps help catch the fallen debris and make it easier to retrieve them.
