What NOT To Do When Caring For Asphalt Shingles

Any roofing contractor will tell you that asphalt shingles are one of the most popular roofing systems in the roofing industry. This is because not only are they affordable but nowadays, they’re also made to last compared to older roofing systems. However, asphalt shingles will only last so long as it’s properly cared for and unfortunately, some homeowners tend to make a few mistakes when caring for an asphalt shingle roof.

Here are the things that you shouldn’t do when caring for your asphalt roofing shingles.

Not Cleaning the Gutters

When caring for your asphalt shingle roof, it’s important that you have your gutters cleaned every now and then, especially during the fall season. This is because leaves, dirt, and other kinds of debris can accumulate on your gutters and if left unattended, this can cause clogs on your home’s gutter system. If your gutters are clogged, it can allow moisture to seep beneath your shingles and cause rot on the wooden components of your roof, compromising its structural integrity in the process.

Using a Pressure Washer or Corrosive Chemicals

According to roof repair experts, you should never use a pressure washer when trying to clean your roof as the speeds of the spray can damage your roof instead of cleaning. As much as possible, avoid using corrosive chemicals when cleaning as well as they can damage the metal components of your roofing system. In fact, it’s best that you leave the roof cleaning to an expert instead to minimize any damage your roof may sustain.

Failing to Trim Your Trees

Finally, you should also trim your trees when you can if you want your asphalt shingles to last for as long as possible. This is due to the fact that if your trees are allowed to grow too much, it can encroach upon your roof, and once that happens, it can either scrape against your asphalt shingles or a strong gust of wind can cause it to snap and fall on your roof, damaging it as a result. As such, be sure to have a professional trim your trees every once in a while to prevent this from happening.
