The roof deck, or sheathing, serves as the foundation of your roofing system. It is placed on top of the trusses to cover the rafters and support the shingles. If you have loose or missing shingles, these would leave your roof decking to be exposed to water, wind and heat. These elements may not instantly cause harm to your decking, and you may not see visible signs of damage. But make no mistake, they have likely reduced the quality of your roof deck. That said, remember that you need a solid base on which to install new shingles. By replacing your old sheathing, you can ensure better quality and protection for your new roof.
