3 Typical & Common Asphalt Roof Myths and Misconceptions

In the U.S., asphalt roofs are a common choice among homeowners due to their affordable cost and durability. With proper care and maintenance, they can last for around two decades. But even with their popularity, these roofs are still surrounded by several myths and misconceptions.

In this post, commercial roofing expert Deschutes Roofing debunks three common misconceptions about asphalt roofs.

1. Darker-Colored Shingles Make Your Home Feel Warmer

It depends on your home. Although darker-colored shingles absorb more heat from the sun, this does not necessarily mean that your home will be warmer and your electric bills will rise as a result. Your roofing system can regulate heat and prevent trapped air from leaking into your living spaces if it has sufficient ventilation and attic sealing. However, if your attic ventilation has issues, you should have it fixed.

2. Fiberglass Shingles and Asphalt Shingles Are Different

Fiberglass and asphalt shingles are the same. Some residential roofing professionals refer to the shingles as fiberglass shingles due to the fiberglass layers in the shingle tabs. The fiberglass acts as a reinforcement fabric that holds the whole shingle together. Furthermore, composition shingles are also the same as asphalt shingles, and in this case, they’re referred to as composition because they’re composed of multiple materials.

3. There’s Actually No Asphalt in the Shingles, They’re Just Named Like That

There is actual asphalt in asphalt shingles. The purpose of this material is to allow granules to adhere to the shingles. Take note that the amount of asphalt in the shingle affects its quality. Typically, a shingle is composed of at least 20% asphalt, and the granules that stick to that layer provide your roof fire and weather resistance. The more asphalt is in a shingle, the heavier the shingle is and the more granules will adhere on the tab.
