5 Reasons Why Your Asphalt Shingle Granules Are Loose or Coming Off

According to roof replacement pros, when it comes to the topic of asphalt roofing systems, granules are a common ingredient in their manufacturing process. This is because with the granules, your roof is given an extra layer of protection against the sun and the elements and therefore, it’s important that it remains intact as the years go by. However, at some point, it’s possible that you may notice that your roof is losing its granules. But why exactly does that happen?

Here are the five reasons why your asphalt roof is losing its granules.

1. New Roof

If your roof is newly installed and you notice that it is losing its granules, you don’t need to worry. This is actually fairly common in new asphalt roofing systems. According to experts, if you notice that your new roof is losing its granules, there’s no need for repairs or replacement as these are just excess granules that are loosening themselves free.

2. Hail Storms

Did a hail storm just pass by your area? If so, you might notice your asphalt shingle roofing system losing its granules thanks to the impact of the hailstones. Once this happens, be sure to contact a roofing contractor as soon as possible as this means your roof is damaged and will have to be repaired by a professional immediately. Otherwise, it can cause further problems for you and your home.

3. Improper Installation

If your roof wasn’t correctly installed by your contractor, you can expect it to gradually lose its granules because the roof is deteriorating earlier than expected. Luckily, since this is a mistake on the contractor’s part, you can easily use your workmanship warranty to get them to rectify the problem as soon as possible.

4. Age

When your roof is beginning to lose its granules, ask yourself how old it is. Most asphalt roofing systems nowadays are meant to last for 25 to 30 years with the proper maintenance procedures but if your roof is past this age and it’s beginning to lose granules, take this as a sign that it’s time to have it replaced as this means that your roof is approaching the end of its overall lifespan.

5. Blisters

Granule loss on your asphalt shingles can also be caused by blisters, which in turn are caused by manufacturing defects. Thankfully, similar to improper installation, you can use your roof’s manufacturing warranty to have it repaired or replaced immediately.
