4 Signs Your Roofer is Cutting Corners

According to experts, whenever you need to get a roof replacement done for your home, it’s best that you hire a reputable professional to get the job done. That way, any mistakes can be minimized and your roof will be replaced properly. Unfortunately, there are some roofers out there who are only good to work with at the start and as your project progresses, they may cut corners in order to save up on costs. But how exactly can you tell if your roofer is cutting corners?

Here are the four signs that say your roofing professional is cutting corners.

1. Using Staples Instead of Nails – When a roofer intends to cut corners, one way they try to do so is by using staples instead of nails. This is because not only are staples less costly to purchase but also because it can make the project go faster. While they do allow for a quicker installation, it’s not recommended for a replacement project as staples cannot penetrate wood the way nails can. This means that the shingles won’t attach properly to your home if staples are used instead of nails, leaving it vulnerable to blow-offs due to strong winds.

2. Failing to Properly Ventilate – Ventilation is important to any roofing system as it prevents the excess heat and moisture build-up that can cause your roof to deteriorate earlier than expected. Unfortunately, some roofers will try to cut costs on your roofing project by not ventilating your roof properly, reducing the efficacy of your shingles in the process.

3. Reusing the Old Flashing – The flashing can help prevent moisture from entering your home via certain weak spots such as the chimney, the skylights, or even your dormer windows. With that in mind, when you’re having your roof replaced, they need to be replaced as well, especially when they’re damaged. However, a less than reputable roofing contractor can attempt to cut corners by reusing your old flashing, causing damage that can allow moisture in as a result.

4. Covering the Shingles – Finally, some roofing contractors will also attempt to cut corners by covering your old shingles with new ones instead of replacing them entirely. While this may seem like a good idea, this isn’t a practice that should be followed as increasing the shingle layers in your roof can cause your new roof to deteriorate earlier than expected while weakening the system’s structural integrity at the same time. With that in mind, you should only hire the best roofers to replace your roofing system for you to avoid this issue.
