Roofing

Common Roof Types, Explained

Along with seamless gutters, the roof protects your home from water damage. It shields you from the elements and keeps your indoor spaces comfortable.

Your property’s appeal and value will also increase with the right roof style.

Here are some of the most popular styles of roofs

Flat Roofs

Many homeowners prefer flat roofing due to the flexibility it offers. However, it might not be ideal for places prone to heavy rains or snow because they don’t drain water as quickly as pitched roofs. They might also require more maintenance because they are more susceptible to leaks and water damage.

Pitched Roofs

Pitched roofs are more of a traditional option. They provide excellent protection against the elements. A great thing about them is that they shed snow and rain quickly.

Mansard Roofs

A lot of older homes have mansard roofs. They feature four slopes with a flat area on top, creating additional living space. Their only downside is that they require more complex installation.

Bonnet Roofs

You can increase your home’s curb appeal with a bonnet roof. It has four sides with a single slope on each side. If you are considering this roof type, it helps to know that it goes well with a seamless gutter system.

Gambrel Roofs

Gambrel roofs are also popular in residential structures. They feature two slopes on each siding, creating extra space for storage or a living area.

Butterfly Roofs

Are you looking for something more unique for your home? You can add more visual appeal to your humble abode with a butterfly roof. It has two sides that meet at the center, creating a butterfly-like shape.

Hip Roofs

Another traditional option is hip roofing. It features four sides that come together at the top. A hip roof excels at withstanding the effects of high winds and rain.

Shed Roofs

Shed roofs are easier to install than other options because it only has one slope. However, they could be more prone to damage from weather extremes. You may want to consider another roof type if you live in a place susceptible to severe storms.

An experienced contractor can help you choose the ideal roof style for your home and needs.
