How Does a Ridge Vent Work To Benefit My Roof?

Ridge vents are typically installed at the peak of the roof. They ensure adequate air flow underneath the roofing so that moisture buildup in these parts of the roof system can be prevented. Ultimately, ridge vents are crucial to the performance and longevity of your roofing.

Deschutes Roofing, an attic ventilation contractor and roof installation expert, further discusses the benefits of ridge vents below

Sufficient Air Flow

Ridge vents basically ensure there is good airflow at the top of your home and below your roofing. A correctly designed ridge vent typically has an exterior baffle and an interior weather filter. The baffle produces external pressure to pull air out of your attic, while the interior weather filter ensures that debris and dirt won’t enter your home.

Attic Ventilation

Ridge vents are instrumental in keeping your attic properly ventilated. Due to its location under your roofing, the attic can easily heat up if there is not enough air flowing in and out. This could eventually affect the temperature in your living spaces and increase the energy used by your air conditioner to cool your interior. Inadequate attic ventilation can also lead to mold and mildew growth in the attic crawl space and the underside of the eaves. That said, failure to ensure proper attic ventilation can lead to roofing repairs.

Longer Roof Life Span

Ridge vents can prevent several roofing issues. That said, by correctly designing and installing these vents, you can expect your roof to stay in good shape and last longer. Ridge vents basically prevent mold growth and rotting since the fresh air circulating through these vents prevents your roof from being exposed to moisture. They also keep your roofing from heating up. With air flowing in and out, your roof can have a stable temperature and prevent long-term exposure to extreme heat, which could cause cracks in the roof structure and attic.
