Asphalt Shingles Blistering: Why Blistering Damage Happens

Your asphalt shingles take some amount of wear and tear every day. It’s not always something you should worry about–unless you start seeing blisters on the roofing material, that is. Asphalt shingle blistering can occur due to a number of reasons.

Deschutes Roofing & Insulation, the leading roof repair and seamless gutter installation company in the area, discuss some of them here.

  • Trapped Moisture. You’ll know your asphalt shingles have blisters because of the pimple-like protrusions, or ‘bubbles,’ on their surface. This can only mean there’s moisture trapped inside the roofing material because of damage. The same thing sometimes occurs during the shingle manufacturing process. Once the shingles are exposed to the sun’s excess heat, the moisture inside them also heats up, bubbling up to the surface and creating those blisters.
  • Poor Roof Ventilation. Blistering in shingles may also happen because the roof itself has poor ventilation. Because there’s no way for heat and moisture to escape from the attic, they’ll build up inside, gradually baking the asphalt shingles overhead. The roofing material’s constant exposure to intense heat takes the form of blisters.

Preventing Blisters in Asphalt Shingles

When blisters form on the shingles, they wear away the protective mineral granules that give the roofing material most of its weather resistance. Once the substrate of the asphalt shingles is exposed to the elements, the roof’s deterioration will occur at a much faster rate. That’s why it pays to take measures that can prevent asphalt shingles blistering and appearing on your shingles. You can, for example:

  1. Invest in higher-quality shingles. There’s less chance of asphalt shingle blistering when you get the material from a trusted industry name. Premier roofing repairs and installation expert, Deschutes Roofing & Insulation carries only exceptional-grade asphalt shingles from top brands, GAF® and Owens Corning®. They are designed for superior durability and weather resistance, allowing for decades of reliable performance.
  1. Always have your roof ventilation checked. Make sure it remains a key part of any professional inspections you schedule with your local roofer. There’s less chance of blisters occurring on your asphalt shingles when the attic is cool and can maintain smooth and efficient airflow. Deschutes Roofing & Insulation offers comprehensive roof inspections. Schedule one with us and we’ll make sure all your crucial roof components, including the ventilation, are given the close attention they need.
