Roofers To Avoid Working With

Bad roofers do not come with a huge sign attached to them stating they are terrible at what they do. They will often cut corners to save on costs which in turn leads to a poor roofing job prone to further damage and expense to you.

Unfortunately, bad roofers do not pay close attention to the following:

  • Permits
  • Insurance
  • Warranties
  • Licensing requirements
  • The surrounding fixtures of the roof, this includes downspouts. This can pose a problem, especially in winter when ice will form in and around the spouts causing significant damage.
  • Best ways to install roofing and using methods that include the right number of shingle layers
  • They won’t inspect the condition of your attic or the underside of your roof
  • You as a customer. They are hard to reach and will very rarely return your call. They essentially just see you as someone to get money from.
  • They will not be bothered about aftercare, or if you are satisfied with the work done

Before you hire a roofer ensure you do your homework and research which ones to use and not use. You can go by word of mouth from friends or family who have used someone before or you can use reviews and testimonials found online. Social media is a great place to find a reputable roofer, you will often find a lot of people recommending certain roofers and other tradespeople on their pages.

What Can Happen?

If you have already had work done on your roof that you just aren’t satisfied with, look for some of the following signs. If your roof has any of these then it is time to contact someone to rectify the problem before it gets any worse and leads to expensive damage that is tricky to fix.

Your roof’s appearance isn’t the same all over –

If your roof looks fine on one side but not on the other then something has gone wrong with the roofing job. If the shingles don’t match then this shows that the roofer has only been bothered to repair part of the roof, not the whole thing. For the roof to look professional all the shingles should match.

Underlayment is missing –

Underlayment is so important when installing or repairing a roof, it provides a waterproof and heatproof layer to protect your house from moisture and heat seeping through. Without the right level of underlayment, your roof is at risk of letting in water when it rains thus causing more damage to the roof and the rooms below as well. Underlayment also protects the roof from signs of aging.

There is no drip edge on your roof –

Drip edges are an absolute must when installing roofing. They are placed at the edge of the roof under the shingles to direct rainwater away from the house to the gutters below. Without it, the roof and the house will suffer from moisture and water damage.

Tiles or shingles not attached correctly –

The roofer repairing your roof should have already checked your local county or city’s building code to find out which attachment method they should be using. Unfortunately, a bad roofer will fail to use the correct nail type or the right amount of nails to secure the roof. This can lead to tiles falling off the roof causing more damage to your home.

The roof is missing shingles –

If you look up at your roof from the ground you may be able to see that shingles are missing, this will stand out and be quite obvious. Once again the roofer has tried to cut corners and save money by not laying as many shingles on your roof.
